best ipod linux?

So I've decided that I want to put Linux on my ipod. I know there are at least two or three major versions out there, but whats the best/most stable one available? I don't really know anything at all about this aspect of linux. Thanks for your help

I have The GtkPod package. GtkPod is a free, graphical tool for transferring files to and from the iPod. It is the Linux equivalent of the iTunes software used for this purpose on the Mac.

I'm done buying their products but if I could put linux on mine it'd be a start. Too bad it's a 4G nano. Anyone heard of something that would work on it?

I used back a few years ago then I had problems with some of their newer software and gave up on it. I would head over there and read through their docs and forums to get advice on what to do with your make/model.
