Okay, I have a Asus P1-P5945GC running Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 32-bit with linux kernel 3.13.0-24 generic, I installed a hard drive in the case and after doing so USB support is basically gone, for some reason the wifi USB dongle works perfectly but any storage device won't show up
lsusb displays the following
Code:
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 148f:5370 Ralink Technology, Corp. RT5370 Wireless Adapter
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub

Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub

I've ensured that I have USB turned on in the BIOS, but no matter what it won't even recognize there's a USB plugged it, the USB ports do have power for some reason when I plug in my external hard drive the LED light keeps on constantly and when I plug in my Iphone or Ipod it will charge it but will not mount it, USB flash drives won't even light up for some reason and this is really starting to bother me because I can't even make a back up of my system encase of a failure. I need this problem worked out because I can't live with a computer without USB support and it's kinda a big deal because my netbook was in the middle of a upgrade to a newer version when the update manager crashed making the computer basically a brick and I can't mount a USB to use Unetbootin so I can install a new OS, I've installed 'usbmount' with little success and this isn't a good thing for someone who's in the process of starting a website and can't store my webpages on a flash drive so I can work on them from a different computer. Please help me.
I had problem with not being able to boot at all except from a DVD or CD. I had a CD upon which I had previous to the problem installed PlopLinux. With that I was able to boot and continue to work. Documentation about the disc suggests that it will find virtually all of your drives.
If you have a bootable USB, PlopLinux should find it and allow you to boot from it. And there may be (almost certainly are) other things that you can accomplish with it. Just check it out here: http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=plop
It's not a completely free program, but there is a free version, which is what I have.
This may be a little obvious, but have you opened the case again and double checked all the connections? It's possible that you interfered with a connection while adding the new hard drive.
Also, make certain the power supply you're using is suitable for your setup. According to specs, that model comes standard with a 200W power supply, which seems terribly low for a modern tower.
Try dusting all the connections with a dry-air duster. (comes in a can) Remove and re-insert all internal cables. This 'cleans' the contacts and can sometimes resolve 'weird' problems that seem to have no obvious cause.
After a brief search for a screw driver I popped the case open and looked around, ensured all the exposed cabling was connected properly (I did find the hard drive cable wasn't fully connected yet it was still able to boot, that was a possible disaster waiting to happen), I will invest in an air duster next paycheck around (I'm paid very poorly where I work) and sadly don't have enough to invest in another power supply, I may pull it from a old desktop I have in the corner I think is 300 watts, I'll keep you posted.
my netbook was in the middle of a upgrade to a newer version when the update manager crashed making the computer basically a brick and I can't mount a USB to use Unetbootin so I can install a new OS,
Does this mean that you cannot boot the computer with the hard drive?
It seems that you do not have a CD/DVD drive ???
You may have to remove the hard drive, install it in a different computer and install your new OS, then re-install it to the netbook.
Well the desktop issues went from bad to worst really quickly, now all USB support is completely gone including network from my wireless dongle, now I was going to just change OSes but I can't migrate my files over because no USB support and I can't use Dukto because no network support so right now my desktop is a brick with all my files just sitting there mocking me.
Distribution: Mainly Devuan, antiX, & Void, with Tiny Core, Fatdog, & BSD thrown in.

Regarding your hard drive installation incident, if you use a seperate home partition no harm has come of your data, just reinstall an O/S, but if the new install overwrote the mbr, you could be in trouble, however there are what are called super blocks that can be written to the mbr for recovery purposes.
I'm not worried about the netbook anymore because I found a old USB in my dresser with crunchbag on it and I backed up all my files before I did the upgrade due to previous bad experiences so right now I'm more focused on retrieving the files on my desktop and trying to figure out why my USB support is lacking. The physical headers I doubt are damaged because just a few days ago the wifi dongle was working perfectly find yet now it's acting as if it's not there. I did notice some symptoms of failure when I had to restart the computer two times to gain wifi support but I sadly didn't take the chance to back up the files at that moment. so right now my problem is either getting network support without ethernet or getting USB support without network connectivity.
I just posted this reply to another user with booting up problems. The part about booting up to USB drives is below.
If you are having problems booting up your Linux or other Operating Systems (OS), you can use the very easy, useful, and very handy, program "Boot-Repair-Disk". This program can repair most booting up issues by just booting to this program and selecting the first option "recommended repair" which is usually a one click repair for fixing your booting problems. This program has saved my butt many times when I was experimenting with installing Linux distributions. I have provided a link below where you can download "Boot-Repair-Disk" as an ".iso" file and create a live usb, or CD or DVD from; or if you can boot to your Linux partition, then you can install this directly into your Linux using the instructions below.
Installing "Boot-Repair-Disk" to your Linux using PPA mode, bring up your "terminal" and type in:
(obviously you have to run it after installing it to repair your booting up problems)
If you cannot boot up your local drive(s), or want to boot to another device like USB drives, then there are very good programs available to allow almost any machine to boot to your local drive(s), external USB drive(s), or CD/DVD drives, like "SuperGrub2 Boot Loader" and "PLOP" which you can burn to CD/DVD or another USB drive. With these programs, I have been able to boot to the USB drives that I have created using the default Linux Mint 17 program and "unetbootin". I prefer to use the "Super Grub2 Boot Loader" program disk to boot my USB drives; It shows all installed operating systems on the machine and lets you choose which one to boot - very cool. I'm not sure, but Super Grub2 may also be able to repair or reinstall the boot information or Grub files.
This isn't even about the notebook anymore it's about the failed usb ports on the desktop, the netbook is fine and working properly without a hitch it's now down to this hardware issue.
