Hi Andy,

We can help you better if you provide more detailed information. Can you please copy & paste the following command into the Terminal, and then copy & paste the terminal output back here so we can see the details?

Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Hi Andy,

You (or someone with "root" access to your computer) have edited your Software Sources incorrectly. "Petra" is the name of a Linux Mint release (not Ubuntu), so there is no such thing as "ubuntu petra".

Can you take a step back and explain why you edited your software sources to include this? I don't want to give bad advice not understanding the full situation.

The normal fix for this situation would be to go to Applications, System, Software Sources and then remove the "broken" repositories that are causing the error messages above.

By the way, you didn't post the output of "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" ... the "update" errors above are just warnings and shouldn't block upgrades from the active/correct Mint repos in your software sources.

I absolutely did not edit my software sources.

I have/had a similar problem; (I'm not sure!):

I just installed MintMade last week, in a vmware player.

There was a shield with a red X in it on the lower right of the "menu" bar, where some active processes show. (near) the sound volume icon, and the date, etc. when I hovered over it, it said "could not refresh the list of packages".

When I clicked on that shield, it tried to update the packages, and then I get this error message:

Could not download all repository indexes

The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Under that was a box with a long description of all the problems:

Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/...cy/Release.gpg Cannot initiate the connection to archive.canonical.com:80 (2001:67c:1360:8c01::16). - connect (101: Network is unreachable) [IP: 2001:67c:1360:8c01::16 80]
Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/...nslation-en_US Cannot initiate the connection to archive.canonical.com:80 (2001:67c:1360:8c01::16). - connect (101: Network is unreachable) [IP: 2001:67c:1360:8c01::16 80]
Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/...Translation-en Cannot initiate the connection to archive.canonical.com:80 (2001:67c:1360:8c01::16). - connect (101: Network is unreachable) [IP: 2001:67c:1360:8c01::16 80]
Failed to fetch http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/...-i386/Packages Cannot initiate the connection to archive.canonical.com:80 (2001:67c:1360:8c01::16). - connect (101: Network is unreachable) [IP: 2001:67c:1360:8c01::16 80]
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead."

So I came here for help. First I spent some time searching for information. That is how I got to this thread.

Before I finished posting it, perhaps 2 hours after I first encountered the problem, I noticed the shield had changed to a green check mark. I'm confused; was there a problem or not?

Well anyway, as I was typing this, it switched back to the red X again!

So, I didn't click submit, and I went back and I clicked on the shield again, and I got an error message, which I was going to post here, but the box disappeared while I was switching windows! So I clicked on the red X again to re-create the problem message, and this time it went and installed two updates and changed back to the green check!

how does this work? I haven't changed any settings! can somebody explain this to me?

The errors suggest you haven't correctly configured networking for your VMWare guest.

https://www.vmware.com/support/ws55/...et_basics.html

What is "MintMade" by the way? The only google hits are threads started by you.

Thank you.
I will not be online for the next almost 2 weeks. I will have to follow up when I return.
I'm spelled it MintMade. It's actually MintMate. And It's also called Petra 16 I think. It's also Ubuntu. I have no idea yet how to understand which description is the proper one to refer to!!

Sorry! I Am a real Newbie,so perhaps that's where I should be. I just though the Mint experts would be here.
Thanks for the link. I will pursue it when I return.

All the best, and thank you again for responding.

I'm not sure why, but the problem resolved itself, without changing anything.
The link you gave me was to VMware workstation, as opposed to VMware player. I think they are not the same. Thank you anyway. Am I supposed to mark this thread solved, or does the OP have to do that? I don't know how to do that anyway
