Well, it seems nobody had the answer to this one. I actually installed Mint 9 on hard disk and now I have the answer. The answer is NO, Mint 9 is NOT compatible with Trinity/KDE 3.5.
Trinity installs and runs fine on Mint 9 at first, but then I needed to install the kernel source and build-essential packages to build kernel modules and make VMWare work. That's the end of all joy. Either package forces COMPLETE removal of KDE 3.5. Amazing, but true.
