On-screen text and icons are way too small

I just installed Linux Mint 13 Xfce edition for the first time on my laptop. What is the best way I make the on screen text and icons appear bigger, they are way too small even in all the applications I use.

Thank you

The problem will be the DPI calculated from the EDID for your display.

Simplest solution should be to force a DPI setting of (for example) 120 in the Xorg.conf

how do I do that?

System->Preferences->Appearance->Fonts.

96dpi is normal for most systems. You can adjust your font sizes any way you want.
