NVIDIA 860M on Linux Mint

Hi there. I'm really new to Linux (just got it a month or so ago) and so may well be asking some stupid questions here, but please bear with me.

I'm running Linux Mint 17 64bit and am having difficulty getting my machine to recognise my NVIDIA 860M over the integrated Intel graphics card.

This seems to be a problem that is fairly common but I haven't been able to really follow the thread of other people's questions / solutions to it.

I've provided some information which might help --- the bottom in particular shows something a little strange. Please help.

I've done all the steps here

and then on running the following command :
sudo apt-get install nvidia-current

I get the following output returned to me:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
nvidia-current is already the newest version
nvidia-current is set to manually installed
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 119 not to upgrade

So I guess I've got the drivers installed.... but my machine is still using the built in intel card?

When I run the command lspci -v, I get the following return... down near the bottom there's a bit about my NVIDIA graphics card (860m) in which it says there's an unknown header type (7f)

Your problem maybe that you need to complete your upgrades maybe nvidia kernel is in it.

Hi: Welcome to Linux Questions.

Looking at this:
Code:
nvidia-current is already the newest version
nvidia-current is set to manually installed
Yes, the Nvidia driver is installed. Anyway...

I am not a graphics expert but I have an idea that might help.

Look in your BIOS and see if there is an option to 'disable' the Intel on board card.

If you want to I think you can install Bumblebee to make your Nvidia and Intel card work simultaneously.
Not sure if that's the answer, sorry.

I looked up the error:
Code:
Aborting because fallback start is disabled.
This Arch WiKi might help-

hi there, thanks for your replies and apologies for my late replying. i've been having a bit of a shake-up of my living arrangements at the minute and this had slipped my mind completely, all been a bit stressful!

i followed that link as suggested and ran the following command:

$ dkms status
which returned the following results:

Code:
bbswitch, 0.8, 3.13.0-24-generic, x86_64: installed
bbswitch, 0.8, 3.13.0-30-generic, x86_64: installed
nvidia-304, 304.117, 3.13.0-24-generic, x86_64: installed
nvidia-304, 304.117, 3.13.0-30-generic, x86_64: installed
virtualbox-guest, 4.3.10, 3.13.0-24-generic, x86_64: installed (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!)
virtualbox-guest, 4.3.10, 3.13.0-30-generic, x86_64: installed
i then ran the following command and had the following result on repeating the dkms status command:
$ sudo apt-get purge nvidia-*

Code:
bbswitch, 0.8, 3.13.0-24-generic, x86_64: installed
bbswitch, 0.8, 3.13.0-30-generic, x86_64: installed
virtualbox-guest, 4.3.10, 3.13.0-24-generic, x86_64: installed (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!)
virtualbox-guest, 4.3.10, 3.13.0-30-generic, x86_64: installed
so - forgive me, but i'm still totally lost here really and i don't want to mess something up and be unable to turn my computer on (this happened the first time i tried to sort out nvidia drivers for this machine!) ---- i've gotten rid of the nvidia drivers. i still have this virtualbox-guest thing, two versions of it, which seem to be clashing - could this be a problem?

what would you do now - is it just a matter of downloading some new nvidia drivers or do i now need to purge/uninstall this virtualbox thing and or get a new copy of bumblebee or something like that?
thank you for your time and patience, look forward to hearing any suggestions.

take care,
f

Looking at the Dynamic Kernel Module Support output I see that the support for the kernel modules are installed. That's good.

I (think) the problem is the 5th line down where virtualbox-guest is giving a 'WARNING' about the difference between the built and the installed module.

It sounds like there is some kind of conflict but I don't have experience with that and it's over my head.
--Sorry that I don't know, grandmal--

However,in the meantime, I will do some research online to try to find out what this means.

Best to wait for our Guru on that.

Were you able to run the command that Mr. EDDY1 mentioned?

Code:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
This was the only Solved thread I could find online with that error-

thanks for your replies and for continuing to try to help. i ran that command and it seemed to go successfully, with just one error at the end :

update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-24-generic
Warning: No support for locale: en_GB.utf8
Processing triggers for libreoffice-common (1:4.2.4-0ubuntu2) ...

what now? would now be the time to install what, bumblebee, nouveau drivers, nvidia drivers, ...?!

I was looking at the OP first post & they installed bumblebee It seems that things changed by te post made by charlysweatpants. It was about installing primus instead of virtualgl.

thank you, i've just read that thread and it seems to show a command which should help, so will try that when i get home from work. but that's just for that en_GB.utf8 thing - i meant more about proceeding with the NVIDIA installation- sorry if i'm being stupid but i'm not really sure what the best place to begin is now that i've cleared it out.

so i've cleared the system out of NVIDIA install, and i've updated everything so it's all up to date, now logic tells me i should be installing NVIDIA drivers or nouveau drivers or bumblebee or something ... ?

Now that you updated your Mint run "dkms status" to see if the kernel by default already has the Nvidia drivers installed. If so, and your still having the same problem you might need to install Bumblebee.
If Bumblebee doesn't help you can remove or uninstall it.

FWIW, I installed Linux Mint 17 last night but don't know the distro that well yet.
I think there is an option for additional drivers and that might help.
Sorry, I can't check, I'm at work for now:-

big ol edit:

SO.
had a bunch more problems BUT i think i've gotten somewhere finally ..... after a lot of trial and error and worrying, i ran these two commands as seen by a poster here:

Code:
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331-updates-dev
Code:
sudo apt-get install bumblebee bumblebee-nvidia primus linux-headers-generic
and!

dkms status gives me :

Code:
bbswitch, 0.8, 3.13.0-24-generic, x86_64: installed
bbswitch, 0.8, 3.13.0-30-generic, x86_64: installed
bbswitch, 0.8, 3.13.0-32-generic, x86_64: installed
nvidia-331-updates, 331.38, 3.13.0-24-generic, x86_64: installed
virtualbox-guest, 4.3.10, 3.13.0-24-generic, x86_64: installed (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!) (WARNING! Diff between built and installed module!)

virtualbox-guest, 4.3.10, 3.13.0-32-generic, x86_64: installed
and more importantly, lspci -v gives me:

so. now i'm waiting - i don't know exactly how to test whether or not it's all legit other than just playing a game, so i'm waiting on a download to finish up now and hopefully it'll be clear - i think i have to use the optirun command (which i'm not realllllly sure about how to do, how to know what to type in, but...) - but now that brings me to the next question:

now that the lpsci -v seems to show NVIDIA as up and running and lookin guuurd, how do i get it to run as my primary and default display driver? when i go to my system info, my intel card still comes up as the one in use, and my driver manager is still empty. so i think(?) that my card is up and running and ready to go right now, but it's still not the one in primary use.
