No background (and other issues ) in KDE

Running Mint 7 KDE CE.

There is no background ( just a checkerboard pattern ). The desktop also does not respond to mouse clicks. There is no 'cashew' in the top right corner and my widgets are gone.

The panel seems OK except the 'cashew' to the right is also gone.

I have to manually invoke kwin to get window borders.

Something is hosed but I don't know what it is.

Applications run fine, I'm using it now.

I've only seen that pattern when plasma-desktop has crashed or I use the zoom feature from the menu when the cashew is clicked. You could reset your desktop by renaming your current hidden .kde4 folder. Then log out and then log back in.

** You will lose any customisation. **

If all is well with the desktop, then there's something in your renamed .kde4 folder causing your desktop to break. You could then restore your renamed .kde4 folder and pick your way through trying to find the cause of the problem or simply abandon it and re-customise your reset desktop.

I tried that but it didn't work.

Also tried removing all kde packages via synaptic and then reinstalling kde but that did work either.

My next step was pure BFAI (Brute force and ignorance). I reinstalled the OS.

That worked.

The checkerboard pattern sounds like you are zoomed out to where you would select an activity. Can you drag it to the left or right? Maybe the desktop screen you were using is off to the left or right of the screen. There are keyboard shortcuts for zooming in and out and switching activities, but I don't know them off hand. A search on Google should provide answers.

If it is a problem with plasma, you could try deleting the two plasma config files.
.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletsrc
.kde4/share/config/plasmarc.bu

You will need to reconfigure your desktop, adding widgets, selecting the theme, but you won't have lost application data.

I've have just a white or a black screen before, and this is what fixed it.
Some people have had the ~/.xsession-errors file explode in size when using KDE4. If it is over 1GB in size you may have the same problem, and should delete it. This problem seems intermittent and may not be .kde4 related.

Problems with KDE .3 in linux mint with checkerboard

My kde 4.3 is totally hosed it seems. I tried the various fixes mentioned above, but nothing seems to work.

I have a checkerboard desktop with a panel, but none of the windows I open have borders or title bars.

When I try to open a bash shell, it does open, but it won't accept input.

Luckily, my gnome is working just fine.

I just prefer KDE.

Using Linux Mint 7 amd64.

When I tried to fix using aptitude update and upgrade, these are the messages I got (in another tty screen):

kstars wouldn't install due to dependency issue with libindi0.

When I tried to install it directly with aptitude:
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/libindi0_0.6-0ubuntu1_amd64.deb (--unpack)

trying to overwrite '/usr/bin/indiserver' , which is also in package indi
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

Can anyone help me with this, or failing that, tell me how to uninstall KDE completely so I can install KDE from scratch?

Thanks,

Mark
