Newbies Thoughts: From XP to Mint 10

I AM Impressed with Mint 10;
The 60% or so that I Can use; and, I'll get to the 40%, later.

To make a comparison that most everyone may be able to identify with; I think that I'll just compare OS's to cars.

Mint 10 makes me think of my Corvettes;[that I once owned] Powerful/agile and a joy to use; not a "Pinto", like XP.

I finally got "Brave Enough" to order a computer with No OS; Mint 10 installed itself with No problems, after inserting the DVD and closing the door. Mostly Automatic, like my Corvettes.

Mint "found" my ISP=No problem. I also had to do very little for Thunderbird to get Email right. No problem there.

So far; and I have used Mint 10 for about 3 months, there have been no "Big" problems, except for one, mainly, and That may be/probably IS/could be My Fault.

I cannot get Mint 10 to operate my Printer!
You can call me a "Geek"; Now, as I Did use Terminal and tried to copy some Code into it, with no luck.lol

I Was "Startled'; today, after opening my email; clicking on a link, and seeing LQ; but, hearing a voice from where I had been viewing, as I turned the computer off last night. That was My fault because I did not Exit out of Firefox.
Actually; I Like THAT feature, as Mint Closes so Quickly, that It is like counting One-two-three-Closed. [XP seemed to take Ages to Close!] When I Start Mint; If I want to go directly to the net; the place where I wanted to go to,to continue from where I left off previously, is right there..so I like it.

Not so likeable; is that If I just walk away from the computer; the screen just fades away; then, I must enter a password, to reactivate...I can live with it, I just do not like the "Over Secure" feature.

Of the 5 Distros that were/are on the DVD; Mint 10 is The MOST "Newbie" Friendly distro of all. {In My "Newbie" Opinion]

Enjoy....later, Gerald

I did; on purpose, try to see if Mint Would "Crash" by opening Many windows...no, smooth cruising.

Mint 10==History==Correct

LOL Hello John;
Yes; I am aware of that. that is why I have ordered a DVD with Mint 14 on it. Though I am reluctant to abandon Mint 10; I have noticed that some updates are no longer being supported; with my last reinstall.

I am also somewhat uneasy about replacing Mint 10 with Mint 14; as many users of 14 seem to be having problems...sooo, maybe I'll wait a few months, though I should get the DVD this week.

Later, Gerald

I don't use Mint 10 but the link below gives a method which should eliminate the lock screen.

The first step to try to get help with that would be to post some information, the name of the printer to start. Most printer manufacturers have hundreds of different printers but they have the name and version(?) on the computer. For example, mint is an HP Photosmart C4680. Posting that info would give someone a starting point.

thanks ; yancek,
I Have: Actually, I'm stumped!lol Sounds silly; but, I Have posted some sites, have Looked at [read Everything that has HP in it.] My computer actually Indicates the correct Printer=HP Deskjet ALL-IN-ONE-SERIES...After trying So many things that my computer indicated "test page #43", I reloaded Mint 10, and tried more....I'm just up to trying "Test Page #3" now..I do Not "give Up" very easily...will do More "Research" and try more combinations, later.

Thanks; Later Gerald

If Mint recognizes the actual printer that's a good first step. If you are repeatedly trying things and they don't work, you might try recording the specific steps you take and the order in which you do them. Additionally, and warnings or messages you get or other results might help someone to help you if you posted them here.
