Netflix Desktop

Hello, I am a very new user of Linux. I was using Ubuntu 12.10, and recently switched to Mint 14.

I was hopeful the change would fix the error I was receiving. When I try to use the Netflix Desktop I get this error:
"The program plugin-container.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."
I can open the actual Netflix Desktop and login, I get this error when I actually try to play a movie.

I have tried removing the Netflix desktop, but nothing seems to be fixing this issue. I believe from the research I have already done it is an error that comes from Wine. But I have not been able to confirm that yet.

I was able to export the following error message. Not sure if this helps anyone or not.

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0xffffffff in 32-bit code (0xf3577050).

You can't watch Netflix Instant content under Linux -- the web site uses Microsoft Silverlight for its streaming features, and there is no open source implementation of this plugin which is up to the task.

Though I use Hulu Desktop instead of Netflix, so no help for the OP from me. I think Ubuntu needs to be used instead of Mint though for this above link to work. I know Mepis forum has discussed this issue a little bit.

I'd especially pay attention to Note1 on above link

NOTE #1
If you had previously tried to install the Netflix Desktop App via our terminal commands from the earlier post, we recommend running the line below in a terminal to clear out any unexpected errors BEFORE trying to install the Netflix Desktop app via the PPA method...

rm -Rf ~/.netflix-desktop

ww.iheartubuntu.com/2012/11/ppa-for-netflix-desktop-app.html

The good news is there is a PPA( Ubuntu / Mint - Other distros have it in their repositories : Arch has it in the AUR under netflix-desktop ). I had the same error on my Arch box and found that it played better with the nvidia driver .vs the free open source version.

If I am reading correctly, I need to update my video driver? I have tried running this: rm -Rf ~/.netflix-desktop , and it did not fix anything. I will try to update the video drive and come back and let everyone know the results.

Turns out I don't have an Nvidia card. This laptop has an AMD ATI M52 [Mobility Radeon X1300] and I am having no luck finding an updated driver.

I guess https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI does not help?

If anyone else is having issues with the Netflix Desktop, I found this site from the www.iheartubuntu.com site:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/netflix-desktop

I no longer get the plugin-container error. Now it's just a black screen

Getting there! I'm enjoying the learning experience this has become.

I did not mean to imply you needed to install a nvidia driver. Just thet the proprietery software addressed the issue for me. I would suggest searching the Linux Mint forums. There appears to be plenty of advice on setting up ATI cards.

Hope this helps.

I reinstalled Linux Mint and now everything is working. Now I just need to add som memory to hopefully help with the video playback. It looks normal, but the audio and video appear to be slightly off.
