Loss of Software Manager

I have Linux Mint 17 installed alongside Windows 7 and XP (all on different drives). All was fine for two months until I tried to use Software Manager to install a programme - the box asking for my password appeared, I entered it and clicked on OK, the "wait a bit" circle appeared for two seconds, then nothing. The Software Manager window didn't open, the screen remained as it was before I opened the main menu. All other sections of "Administration" work normally, as do the other menus and sub-menus. Has anyone seen this before, and does anyone know if I can re-install the Software Manager??

Try this:
Code:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall mintinstall
If that throws up some errors, post them here.

Coralfang Thank you! I'll add this to my list of commands that I am compiling, and let you know how it works!

Coralfang: the re-install didn't work, with the error message being "mintinstall could not be downloaded". I have had trouble with downloads at that time of the night before, so I'll try again today at a better time, and post the results.

Coralfang: tried again, with this result:
ron@ron-GA-970A-D3 ~ $ sudo apt-get install --reinstall mintinstall
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Reinstallation of mintinstall is not possible, it cannot be downloaded.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 0 not to upgrade.

Tried just a straight install:
ron@ron-GA-970A-D3 ~ $ sudo apt-get install mintinstall
Reading package lists... Done

Reading state information... Done
mintinstall is already the newest version.
0 to upgrade, 0 to newly install, 0 to remove and 0 not to upgrade.

Tried to run it:
ron@ron-GA-970A-D3 ~ $ mintinstall

Are you able to update the currently installed packages?
Code:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
If that throws up errors, (looking at the error you posted) it might be that your repositories are messed up.

Check them, in this file:
Code:
/etc/apt/sources.list.d/additional-repositories.list

Check the contents of the first line, it should be in the format of:
Code:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-wine/ppa/ubuntu trusty main
(according to https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ubuntu/ppa )

Did mintinstall stop working after you added the ppa repository for wine packages? You might have added it incorrectly -- could be the cause.

Try apt-get clean as root from the command line.

From the man page:

Quote:
clean clean clears out the local repository of retrieved package files. It removes everything but the lock file from /var/cache/apt/archives/ and /var/cache/apt/archives/partial/.
It fixed my system when I had a similar problem.
