LMDE v.12 : VLC is unable to open the MRL 'bluray:///dev/dvd

Although I've installed all of the blu ray-related files that I can find from the articles, I still cannot play blu ray discs on my blu ray burner.

Computer correctly sees the drive and identifies it as a CD/DVD/Blu-Ray Drive and it plays none blu-ray with no problem. However, when I put in even an old blu ray such as Star Trek First Contact, I get the following error message:
Blu-Ray error:
Path doesn't appear to be a bluray
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'bluray:///dev/dvd'. Check the log for details.

Can anyone help me on this? It almost seems as if I have to add a line to the fstab identifying the drive as a blu ray regardless of the fact that LMDE already correctly sees and id's it.

Or is this a VLC issue?

Thanks for any help you can provide.
