installing HP laserjetM1212nf MFP on Lisa requires cups-dev, where do I find cups-dev

I had the HP Laserjet M1212nf MFP going on Mint 11 but then I upgraded to Mint 12, Lisa.

The printer works insofar as it will print its own test page. It also appears to be installed on the OS because it is listed on localhost. However, printing a test page from the Printers window returns an error. The Printing troubleshooting dialogs tell me to "Enable the 'Publish shared printers connected to this system' option in the server settings using the printing administration tool. To start this tool, select System->Administration->Printing from the main menu.

First problem: Mint 12 does not offer me this menu path. There is only System Settings and no apparent way to drill down to Administration. It may be that with the printer installed locally, this is not the answer anyway.

Continuing with Printing troubleshooting, anyway, returns the status message 'ready to print'. That is followed by Enable Debugging. A log is generated which I do not understand.

I have got to the point where I decided to install the latest hplip (3.11.12) which required missing dependencies. I could not install gcc so, via other postings elsewhere, used 'sudo aptitude install build-essential'. That called for python-dev which installed right away with apt-get install. Now there are 4 dependencies to go, the next one being cups-dev. I cannot find cups-dev anywhere, (the terminal actually calls for cups-devel, but I cannot find that, either).

This seems an awfully long way around to install a standard HP printer, there must be an easier way. If there is, I do not know what it is. Could you please point me in the right direction. The hplip site is not terribly hepful. It told me I already had the correct earlier version, which does to work, either.

Your time is appreciated, thank you

I remember coming across such a problem in ubuntuforums sometime back. You might be able to find some information online about this cups-devel library. I will post the link if I manage to find it.

Edit:

Here are the links.
Solution to a similar problem

You might also try to install the package libcupsys2-dev for cups-devel as indicated here

----------------------
Edit 2:

I just checked in my installed system. The library is called libcups2-dev, it looks like.

Sorry, not really solved in any useful sense. An auto-install function recently popped up and started. That worked but I cannot explain why it did not happen in the first place.
Thanks to the posters for your time.
