Is it really necessary to install all these packages just to run amarok ?

Yep sure looks that way. Those are all dependencies. Note that some of the direct dependency may have their own dependencies, making the installed list rather large.

Blasted! Im not keen on using so much space since I'm running on an SSD, but if thats the only way to run amarok then .... Alas, lots of disk space will be used.

Then stick with one that's native to your desktop environment. That way it does not have to pull in all of those KDE dependencies.

For the record, that is not the full KDE desktop (just some KDE libraries that are necessary dependencies of Amarok). Frankly, 203mb isn't that much disk space, it's just a few minutes of HD video for example. Unless your drive is super-tiny (like one of those 4gb netbooks) I wouldn't worry about it.

If you are looking for Amarok alternatives, the Arch wiki has a comprehensive list, including some that are quite lightweight: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php...ons/Multimedia

Clementine is supposedly like an earlier Amarok, before it developed delusions of grandeur.

Yeah, I realized, I probably should have mentioned that I didnt want to install all the KDE specific dependencies just to use amarok. I had a mindfart and it looked really simmilar to the dependies for installing the desktop environment, so thats what I put in my title. 203 MBs is still a lot of bloat, just to play some music. Regardless, I think I've found the media player for me.

Thanks, Clementine actually looks quite good.
