Unhappy I need help migrating applications from old Linux Mint 11 to new one Mint 14.

I'm currently using Linux Mint 11 and I need to move all my programs installed on my current Linux Mint version 11 to the newest version 14 but I only want programs and packages that won't interfere with packages already installed on the new version 14 Distro. How do I copy only programs that won't require the removal of packages already installed on Linux Mint 14? Somebody told me about this application called "dselect" which copies the list of all programs installed on Linux 11 to install them on Linux Mint 14, but some programs require the removal of some packages already installed on Linux mint 14 and that's what I'm afraid of because it might remove and replace good applications already installed on Linux Mint 14 and replace them with older ones or bad ones. I hope you get the idea, I'd really appreciate any help.

Have you checked to see if these applications are allready in the new version? If not, you can probably download the same programs for Linux Mint 14 and install the new ones. Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately they are just too many. And some of them I might have installed using commands and don't even have a GUI, that's why I want to make sure I have them in case I don't remember their names.

I'm not sure if this will get you anywhere, but CloneZilla might help you make a complete copy of your old hard drive......I would check others first though; I've only heard of Clone Zilla, and have never used it.

first you have to make a list of your applications using the commandline. It will not be an easy task since you will need a script..

Wink

To visualize the list of installed packages, we use the following command
Code:
dpkg-query -W
we need to play with this command to get to our goal
