I have never tried it, but I believe it is possible. After you install the 4.2 kernel, (if it works), you then have to delete the default kernel. That is because anytime you update Grub, the newer kernel will once again become the default.
Having said that, I have tested both Mint 18 and Mint 17.3 and decided that I prefer 17.3 So, in my sometimes humble opinion, there is nothing wrong with installing 17.3 instead of 18.
