Question How to restore files?

After backing up my files with the backup tool, when I want to restore them to a new install, what do I use for "Destination?" I've used /home, but the backup folder ends up being another folder in /home and not a restoration of my previous OS's /home.

Just call me dumb, but tell what to do while you're at it.

Thanks.

Please be more specific about "the backup tool". Which tool? There exist at least a dozen backup tools regularly used.

What are you backupping? /home or /?

If it is /home, and a restore appears at /home/home, you must restore at /, but as root.

If it appears as /home/bin, /home/sys etc, you have been doing a complete backup and you should restore to / as well.

The backup tool that I'm referring to is the unbranded Mint Backup included in Linux Mint 8 Helena Main Edition and Linux Mint 9 Isadora Beta. It is found at system>administration>backup tool (Gnome menu).
