I am not able to play WMV files from Linux Mint 8.
I tried installing VLC, w32codecs but none helped me..
I get this message when tried to play the file:

The requested plugins are:

Any suggestions is appreciated.

I haven't had any problems playing WMV files with MPlayer.
You might also look for a program that will change the format to something you do not have issues with, like MPEG or AVI. There are several programs that will do that (I wish I could help you out with names, but I am most concerned with changing music files to MP3 in Audacity).

Install the package non-free-codecs, this package contains all codecs you need:
sudo apt-get install non-free-codecs
