I just installed Mint 9 LXDE on an old computer, and after working around the 'impossible to log in' bug (that I also encountered on the Fluxbox version of Mint 9), I've got it running nicely except for one thing:

The system automatically sets the monitor refresh rate to 85 Hz, but the monitor doesn't handle that well - it makes the screen image wobbly - and it should be set at 75 Hz. I keep setting it to 75 Hz in Preferences->Monitor Settings, but after rebooting it's back at 85 Hz again.

Is there some way to make the 75 Hz setting stick?

(I googled for a solution but everything I found refers to config files that aren't on my system, eg. xorg.conf, so I'm guessing that Mint 9 LXDE is doing things differently.)

With the newer Linux distributions they do not generate an /etc/X11/xorg.conf. Instead they rely on Xserver to examine the hardware (i.e. Monitor) and make the right choices.

But you can still use the xorg.conf file to configure your Xserver environment.

If you have a backup copy of xorg.conf from a previous installation on that computer, you should be able to use it with the LXDE installation.

If you have old copy of a Knoppix CD or some other Live CD, you might boot them up and see what kind of xorg.conf they generate and then make a copy of it to use on this installation.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. In all the searching I've done on this issue that's the first time I've read that an xorg.conf can still be used. Either that's not very well documented or my searches missed it repeatedly
