Rep:
How do I get linux to actually shutdown and turn off the PC?
I'm using linux mint xfce
When I tried the livedisk and even on install I always briefly saw something about ACPI. And because it always locked up on me, I made sure to disable ACPI in the BIOS and as the option when installing Mint (I also used nomodeset option as I read that causes lock ups also).
Doing that helped me install Mint succesfully and it works great.
But I'd like to have Mint turn off my PC when I tell it to shutdown, but instead it does some "halt.." or something and requires me to turn off the power manually.
Is there anyway to get this fixed? I'm worried if I turn on ACPI in the BIOS or try to install it somehow, which i think might be required for this fix, that Mint will lockup on me constantly like it did with the livecd or when i tried to install it originally.

If the system is hanging up and not turning off, it hasn't really called "halt." It has announced that it *will* be calling the system to halt, and it's politely waiting for programs, daemons, etc to close themselves before it halts. You can halt the system directly (at least, if your Mint distro still has the traditional init system-- which as far as I know it still does, but probably the last Mint release before they go to the dark side):
/etc/rc.d/init.d/halt stop
Running that command should turn the computer off immediately
. (I'm sure the official position is that doing this is not recommended, etc., etc., but I've never had any problems arise from shutting down this way, and it's better than forcing a hard shutdown by cutting off the machine's power)
PS-- run that command as root; you can get a root shell with the live system just by using the command "sudo su." only run as root when doing admin-level tasks, running as root all the time is dangerous.

According to the dmidecode info you supplied your motherboard's BIOS is up-to-date. That's one good thing.
IME (
mainly with Asus / AMD motherboards ) enabling ACPI functions (
before installing an OS ) has always been an asset in ensuring the proper operation of a motherboard. Your OS should shut down normally via the methods found in the OS' GUI sans any need for Terminal commands. If it doesn't then one or more improper BIOS settings may be the cause.
If you haven't done so already you may wish to study the BIOS Setup section of your motherboard's users manual and record the BIOS settings which you are currently using before enabling 'Load Optimized Defaults', rebooting back into the BIOS, enabling 'Cool 'n' Quiet' and then rebooting into the OS.

BTW. A while back I set up an Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4600+ / ASUS M3A78-EMH HDMI / GV-N730SL-2GL rig with 8GB of DDR2 800 MHz RAM for a neighbour. I chose 64-bit Linux Mint 17.3 MATE augmented with 4.2.0-42-lowlatency (
because my neighbour’s PC has a small monitor which the GT-730 drove reasonably well, otherwise I would've went with 64-bit Linux Mint 17.3 XFCE ) and installed the nVidia driver version recommended by Driver Manager. That PC ran well and I've received no complaints since.
I chose not to use *Linux Mint 18 MATE on that machine mainly because it was too 'rich' for such older hardware in terms of resource consumption (
there were other minor issues as well which aren't found in LM 17.3 ) and because IME the first point release of any new Linux Mint OS tends to provide a more stable introduction. IIRC Linux Mint 18.1 is due for release in mid to late December although IMO Linux Mint 17.3 is still the better choice older machines.
*Edit:
Caveats re Linux Mint 18 based upon Ubuntu 16.04 LTS
1) Both of the above GNU/Linux operating systems (
and presumably others which are also based upon Ubuntu 16.04 LTS ) have a daemon and nine associated libraries & files which can automatically update a motherboard's UEFI / BIOS over the Internet. There does not appear to be any obvious way of disabling this feature / IMO potential vector for the installation of a maliciously modified UEFI / BIOS short of uninstalling its constituent components.
Launch Synaptic Package Manager and search for and ensure the complete deletion of the following 10 files (
which ones are actually installed depends upon how the UEFI / BIOS was configured at OS installation time ):
Code:
fwupd
fwupdate
fwupdate-amd64-signed
fwupdate-signed
libdfu-dev
libdfu1
libfwup-dev
libfwup0
libfwupd-dev
libfwupd1
Note:
The above file deletion approach does not work correctly in Ubuntu 16.04 LTS because
and
(
which allows one to install additional applications and utilities from the Ubuntu Repositories ) are co-dependent.

2) Getting hdd temperatures to display in Linux Mint 18's MATE Sensors Applet
In Linux Mint 18 the daemon
is not enabled to run with root privileges by default as doing so can (
from what I've read ) enable hddtemp to be exploited by an attacker (
this has never been an issue for me in the approx. 3 years I've been using Linux Mint ). However, hddtemp must be root privilege-enabled in order to display hard drive temperatures in MATE Sensors Applet. How to do so:
In Terminal, run...
Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure hddtemp
...and follow the onscreen instructions.

Good. Just to confirm, does resume from suspend / sleep work correctly on your motherboard?

The chances are at least even that resume from suspend works on that 'board. The reason I asked is because of its nVidia chipset.
Resume from suspend has worked correctly under Linux Mint 13 - 17.3 on every all-AMD system I've owned.
