Gateway DX-4850 64-bit has no sound with Mint 12
 

At work, so a lot of this is from my memory.

Have a Gateway DX-4850 64-bit with i7 CPU, Nvidia Geforce 420 graphics card (apparently) and Intel-hda PCH sound card on a Realtek chipset.

No speakers, just running audio through my Vizio monitor (connected to computer by an HDMI connection).

Decided to try LinuxMint (dual booting with Win7), so I installed LinuxMint 12 (KDE) and then ran update. Some 410 files and packages were updated. Did not try audio before updating.

I have no sound. I added the line "options snd intel-hda model=pch" (without quotes) to the end of the alsa-base.conf file. no joy. Any suggestions?

Display is wonky (should be 19xx by 12xx but only goes to 1080 by xxx), but usable. Need to get the sound working though. Other than that, no problems.

Video display wonky..in that it only gets 1024x768 not 1900x1200 only, or is it stuffed in some other way? Have you installed the nVidia drivers?

With audio over HDMI you will have to check your mixer settings, normally the mixer is setup to output audio to the analog jacks.

Installing the Nvidia drivers always fails from the Nvidia website. I'll see about downloading them and then installing without the package manager.

Why dont you use jockey to install the nVidia drivers, rather than sodding around with manual installation?

Ah, I forgot to add about that: I tried jockey. Kept failing on me. Haven't had a chance to look at the log to find out why. I suppose it's because I'm not root when I go to update the drivers.

I give up. Both Linux Mint 12 and SimplyMepis recognize my Nvidia card and HDA Intel PCH card. I have run alsmixer until I am blue in the face, using every conceiveable configuration. Kernel modules are there. Google instructions and they make references to settings that I either don't have or cannot change. Movies work. DVDs work. But no sound on either. I know the video card is recognized.

What is the problem with running sound over an HDMI connection through my monitor that kernel developers want to make so eff****ing difficult?

I dopnt know why jockey is failing, mint 12 should have a driver version that supports the GT420.

You cant blame the kernel devs for issues with audio over HDMI. HDCP alone makes audio over HDMI nowhere near as easy as it should be.

I'd guess you are trying to use nouveau? Unless you are using very new nouveau versions, audio over HDMI will not work with GT/GTX 4XX/5XX cards.

It should work (after much prodding and poking the mixer) if you can get the nVidia closed drivers installed.
