Forgot password for linux mint 17.1

Hi. I encrypted my linux mint 17.1 computer and put in a user password too. I remember the encryption password but forgot the user password. Am I doomed? Is there any way to recover my data? I tried some ways to break in that I saw on YouTube but they didn't work. Any answers?

You don't tell us what you've done/tried, but saying "didn't work" doesn't give us much to work with.

Easiest thing to do is to (assuming you get the GRUB boot menu), would be to boot in single-user mode, then just type in "passwd <username>", and set a new one. Can you get to the GRUB boot menu? How did you encrypt things?

From the grub menu advanced options, you probably have a recovery mode / recovery shell menu entry. (not 100% sure if mint 17.1 sets that up automatic or not). From there just set your user password as tbone described.

If you plan on using Mint, you might try a currently supported version rather than 17.1 which has not been supported for over 3 years.
