File Handling,Ark, Copy files

I am using Mint 14 with Kde Desktop and trying to install flightgear Sceaanry files. I have downloaded the tgz files to my download directory and am attempting to install them to the flightgear directory. I was trying to use ark from within Dolphin(as root) to move/unzip multiple files at once. Now it gets confusing, somehow those files didn't get there but some others did, and I don't know where from?? I am including a screenshot. Can someone tell me what in the world I have done and how to correct/do it right? Thank you so much in advance.

and at the virtual terrain project

Yes I did read them but I must have missed something, it said if I wasn't using a GUI (ark?) how to do one file at a time and I was trying to speed up the process since I already had them downloaded. Still not just what I really did do??

you read the manual ?
this one in the ftp archive
http://mirrors.ibiblio.org/flightgear/ftp/Docs/
see chapter 2 page 19 of the pdf
section 2.1 " installing scenery "

there is something very odd with the photo in the first post
the folder
"/usr/share/games/flightgear/scenery "
has the root "/" folders in it
/bin,/boot,/lib,/usr/ ,/var should not be in the scenery folder

and if that is the / that is displayed then the flight gear data should not be being extracted to "/"

on a debain / ubuntu based os like mint
what did you install for the main flightgear program
---
Ubuntu: Option 1: FlightGear v2.10 packages are now available from PlayDeb.net
--- or ---
Ubuntu: Option 2: On Ubuntu, FlightGear can be installed using the “synaptic” tool.
--- or ---
Ubuntu: Option 3: Launchpad PPA for FlightGear 2.10 (contributed by Saikrishna Arcot)

I installed the main Flightgear program with the Synaptic Package Manager from the Mint app menu. I have NO idea whatsoever how anay of the other files got into the /scenery dir. I selected about 6 of the scenery files at one time and had ark to extract them to the scenery dir, and that is when all those other files showed up??? How can I undo/ fix this mess and does anyone have any idea how this happened? Going to read the suggestions now thank you again for your help.
