Did anyone manage to copy Audio CD using Brasero?

I can’t copy Audio CDs using Brasero in Gloria 7 and Helena 8. Brasero fails during copying the contents of the disc to a file. I switched off all plugins (File Checksum and Normalize) and I use Disc copy option (Create 1:1 copy of a CD/DVD).

First Brasero recognizes Audio CD:

Code:

Select disc to copy:
Audio Disc: 43 min

Then I select writing the image of the disc to a file:

Code:

Select a disc to write to:
Image file

Next Brasero creates the image but at the end it displays such a window:

Code:

Error while burning.
An unknown error occured.

The end of the log file looks like:

Code:

BraseroReadom stderr: Time total: 227.543sec
BraseroReadom stderr: Read 535729.50 kB at 2354.4 kB/sec.
BraseroReadom stderr: HUP
BraseroReadom process finished with status 255
BraseroReadom called brasero_job_error
BraseroReadom finished with an error
BraseroReadom asked to stop because of an error
        error          = 0
        message = "no message"
BraseroReadom stopping
BraseroReadom got killed
Session error : unknown (brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2811)

I have no idea why Brasero doesn’t work for me. I tried it on two machines (ThinkPads T40 and T41), with two versions of operating system (Gloria 7 and Helena 8), using two Audio CDs (first bought but unprotected and second copied in Slackware and unprotected too).

As I know I can install in Linux Mint K3b but I prefer default applications. What could I do to make Brasero usable?

Below are two log files produced by Brasero during storing the image of Audio CD into a file.

I tried to burn Audio CD with Brasero in two ways: by burning the image file produced by Brasero and by burning Audio CD on the fly. In both cases the resulting CD was invalid.

Here I found an advice to replace wodim by libburn or cdrecord from cdrtools. I tried to install both of them but apt-get reports it can’t find such package:

Code:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package cdrtools

As I see here just after:

Code:

BraseroReadom stderr: HUP
BraseroReadom should check session consistency:

Code:

BraseroReadom process finished with status 0
BraseroReadom called brasero_job_get_fd_out
BraseroReadom called brasero_job_get_action
BraseroReadom called brasero_job_get_output_type
BraseroReadom called brasero_job_get_image_output
BraseroReadom called brasero_job_get_session_output_size
BraseroReadom called brasero_job_add_track
BraseroReadom called brasero_job_get_action
BraseroReadom Finished track successfully
BraseroReadom got killed
BraseroReadom stopping
Checking session consistency (brasero_burn_check_session_consistency brasero-burn.c:184:)

In my case BraseroReadom finishes with an error:

Code:

BraseroReadom process finished with status 255
BraseroReadom called brasero_job_error
BraseroReadom finished with an error
BraseroReadom asked to stop because of an error
        error          = 0
        message = "no message"
BraseroReadom stopping
BraseroReadom got killed
Session error : unknown (brasero_burn_record brasero-burn.c:2811)

Because in my system there isn’t cdda2wav I guess Brasero uses cdparanoia to read Audio CD.

***

I was wrong. Brasero uses readom to read compact discs and wodim to write them. I stored Audio CD to a file with readom but I was unable to store TOC file because readom reported “Segmentation fault”. I was also unable to blank written CD-RW disc with Brasero because it sees it as a blank disc. All these programs are buggy.

Here I found a very interesting article about buggy Debian’s and other distributions’ forks of programs from cdrtools package including readom and wodim. Debian maintainers reportedly agreed to distribute original cdrtools on March 6th 2009 but it seems that package isn’t available at least for Linux Mint users.

w1k0 03-13-2010 04:11 PM

Finally I found advice to try GnomeBaker. I installed and tested it.

The program copied Audio CD successfully though at the end it stated it’s unable to fixate the disc:

Code:

wodim: Cannot fixate disk.
In spite of that CD player sees that disc and plays it.

GnomeBaker can also blank CD-RW discs.

In my opinion it’s pointless to install K3b in Linux Mint since there is no cdrtools for that distribution.

Because GnomeBaker manages better with buggy wodim I removed Brasero from the system.

I don’t understand why Linux Mint developers choose as default such useless application. There is a lot of bug reports on different forums concerning Brasero and the main advice is to install K3b. In my opinion GnomeBaker is a better solution for Linux Mint with Gnome desktop.

I use GnomeBaker in AntiX. It is the default burner. Never had a problem with using it for burning Isos and Cds or Movies. Now I use it in all my installs instead of K3b or Braserio. It is a Lighter app also.

Thank you, rokytnji for your reply. It isn't nice to discuss the problem oneself. I'm glad someone else found the same program useful. It means my choice isn't so bad. Personally I use Slackware but now I'm preparing Linux Mint oriented machine for my friend.

Keep away from "cdrtools". The author is a raving lunatic, and publishes his grudge against what someone at Debian might have said 10 years ago everywhere. He probably is just crying because he is no longer selling copies of cdrtools-proDVD. So take any of his stories (and he is *everywhere*) with a truckload of salt.

For the average user, cdrtools doesn't have any benefits. The "broken", old version in Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora/OpenSuSE/RedHat always worked for me. The "official" (Schily version) is supposed to be better when you have really ancient SCSI writers, or when you need Blue-Ray writing support. And on the long run, all linux distribution will switch to libburnia anyway.
