Been using Linux since June. I tried this month to change to Mint from Mandriva, and did indeed find it much quicker on this laptop, BUT no internet.
Having bulldozed over my ~10th Mint7 instal with my Mandriva CD, I can once again get online to ask about Mint.

With Mint installed, I can establish a connection,and the usb modem shows Connected signal, but any attempt at reaching a website is met with the notice: "Could not find server at ..checkyourconnection/..spelling/..DNS server settings/...firewall.."
The DNS server settings may be the issue, because I pretty well understand the other options.
I found 1998 Linux book and so went to etc and ppp and options and put a hash sybol on 'lock' setting. It didnt change anything.
It's probably way simpler, love to get that Mint going!

I always thought that DHCP dealt with the assignation of DNS. Are you setting up your connection manually or with DHCP?

I googled dhcp, and remain unsure of whether I would even know if dhcp was active in the process. So much data under the bridge since june, can't recall , but still have shiny Mint CD from lab.
Mandr has been working so well that I'm reluctant to throw all the pieces up in the air again, but maybe after a bit more actual using computer, I'll feel like some more installation adventures
(I haven't got dual installation procedure really smooth yet.)

When you say "usb modem" - is that one of those that look like a usb memory drive?.

( I always thought that they would only work on a M$ system, not on lnx/mac ).
( but some do work under these O/Ss).

which is why I am using a 3g wireless modem/router from BPH.

yes pierre, it looks like that, was not difficult to configure with Mandriva,(and I am only with Linux since June) also went online with it with a Knoppix CD OS!, and I suspect Mint will be fine too when I'm ready again to juggle with Operating Systems.
