zaurus (OZ 3.3.5) can konsole save comand history?

i cant seem to get my z to save the command history. i made a file .ash_history and if i put things in it they will work as history items but it does not automatically write my commands to it.
in my /etc/profile i have added HISTSIZE=50 and HISTFILESIZE=50 and HISTFILE=~/.ash_history

but if i try set -o history it says illegal option. i thought this might mean it cant do it at all but yet it reads from the history file if i put stuff in there.
am i doing something wrong?

I've noticed that when I kill the console by tapping "x" in the corner, it won't keep my command history. But when I type "exit" to get out, it does.

BTW- I'm running OZ3.2 on a 5500.
