Okay, the error lines are:
Quote:
(EE) fglrx(0): unknown type(0xffffffff)=0xff
And the warning lines are:
Quote:
(WW) The directory "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/" does not exist.
(WW) Open ACPI failed (/var/run/acpid.socket) (No such file or directory)
(WW) fglrx(0): GetVBEMode failed
(WW) fglrx(0): board is an unknown third party board, chipset is supported
(WW) fglrx(0): AVIVO graphics based cards do not support Mirror Mode. Clone mode will be used instead.
Thanks!

Well, l00b, first things first: tough luck with the problem. I have a Dell Latitude D610 w Mobility X300, and that was a big pain for me as well. ATI hasn't been very nice to linux lately, at least in my opinion. Anywho, your best bet is probably to change your distro to Ubuntu, like you were saying earlier. Other distros might work too, check out Slack and Freespire. You never know if you might get lucky! What your prob really sounds like is that X was improperly configged/installed, so maybe a new install will solve that. Happy hunting :-).

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/list.xml

You want to see ATI FAQ and 3D Guide. Just set VIDEO_CARDS variable to fglrx and emerge will pull in ATI driver.

My mind is set on gentoo, I've been wanting to set it up forever. I'm not very fond of Ubuntu anyway..

I decided to reinstall X. This was a pain. Now, the only thing it's really complaining about is my depth. It says a depth of 8 is invalid, but in my xorg.conf, i commented out all the depths except 24, and it still says 8 is unsatisfactory.

Ideas? (Same problem with vesa)

See Xorg.0.log

Look what driver is loaded, errors etc.

I think I fixed my depth problem.. I set the default depth to 24 and that subsection from my Xorg config is as follows:

Great. I noticed you are not using acpid, you should, it's a laptop.

Look, there is lots of things other distros do for you and Gentoo does not. Gentoo is a "manual" distro by definition and you should be familiar with Linux before you dive into Gentoo. I know, there are things like GUI install and genkernel, etc. These certainly help to widen Gentoo userbase and help to finance Gentoo development. In reality, there is only one Gentoo installer and that's you. I've seen people complaining in Gentoo forums Gentoo is slower than Ubuntu. They don't understand Gentoo is not a distro, it's a framework to build your own Linux. And it runs as good as you have made it. Oh, end of rant.

Add acpi to your USE flags, run emerge -avND world, finally run rc-update add acpid default.

I've gotten acpi and added it to my USE flags. When I try to emerge world, I get a fetch error for sys-apps/man-pages-2.64 and it won't let me continue.

Thank you for your help

First, never run emerge world without running emerge --sync beforehand.
Second. Get ufed (emerge -av ufed). This is USE flag editor.
Third. What profile you use, acpi may be set in profile, in this case you do not need to set it in make.conf.
Fourth. If you have run emerge --sync and still cannot fetch man pages do emerge --skipfirst. Man pages are not system-critical and can be skipped.
