Xubuntu 8.04.1 won't "see" laptop HDD

I have just finished creating a liveusb to install linux on a friend's netbook but when I start the install process the laptop HDD doesn't show up as a drive to install to; only the usb drive itself.
I have tested the liveusb on my own laptop and there was no problem finding my HDD, so I am curious how to locate or force the the liveusb to see my friend's drive.
As a test I took out his HDD and plugged it into an external drive connector and started the liveusb- it was recognized! However, after doing an install the Grub manager loaded, then I got the following error:
"Error 21: Selected disk does not exit
Press any key to continue..."

Thanks,

-Monty

Sounds like Hardy doesn't know about your mates controller chip. Try a later [X]ubuntu.

As syg00 suggested try a newer version of (x)ubuntu or maybe a *buntu/linux netbook distro. I have had great success with eeebuntu 3.0 based on ubuntu I use the standard because I do not like the netbook interface. Eeebuntu is getting ready to release 4.0 which will be based on Debian Sid.
