Unhappy XFCE4 Power Manager and XMonad on Gentoo -- LCD Brightness not adjusting

Hello,

I am running the XFCE4 Panel and Power Manager on Gentoo Linux with XMonad as my window manger. I try using Fn+F4 to turn the brightness down and Fn+F5 to turn the brightness up and neither work. Would you please give me some tips to get it working? It won't work in Gnome 3 logged in from GDM either.

xbacklight works -- how to wire it up to Fn+F4 and F5?

xbacklight is a wonderful program and it works, but I want to wire it up to Fn+F4 and Fn+F5. I tried xev to see if pressing those keys generated an event, and for some reason they don't. I even tried loading the wmi and dell_wmi [Dell laptop] kernel modules and restarting Xorg and no change in xev.
