x86_64 on HP zv5410 abysmally slow

I've got an HP zv5410 with the AMD64 3000+ in it. I have the kernel set up to do the powersaving/cpu frequency adjustments on the fly, and powernowd doing the userspace adjustments. It appears to be working, and even though the /sys interface reports the CPU at 1800MHz under high load, something is horribly wrong.

When encoding MPEG off my DVR with mencoder it's getting about 35fps with lavc vcodec=mpeg4 and acodec=mp3. This is simply horrid as my 2.6GHz celeron gets over 50 with the same source material and encoding parameters.

And to cover all the bases, yes, I've tweaked the disk with hdparm and all that jazz.

Can I get numbers from someone else to compare to mine? I'll even provide source material if you don't have any. My brother has a 3200 in a desktop that *destroys* this job at over 140fps. I know laptops are slower, but not by a factor of 400% ...

What am I doing wrong?

The plot thickens ... It seems that VirtualDub only manages a lowly 45fps on Windows on this hardware.

Do these laptops just suck or what?
