X wont work properly on HP/Compaq nx9105

I have installed Gentoo on my nx9105 and X wont work as it should. I used slackware before, but I used my leet skills and wrecked the kernel, causing the desktop to be pushed ~4cm to the left leaving a big black stripe at the right hand of the screen. No matter how I tried using a new kernel or undoing the changes I did the desktop wouldn't display correctly. So I decided to give Gentoo a go. I did a Stage 1 install with took the entire weekend to compile, and the error is still there! Whenever I use nvidias drivers the display gets pushed to the left. I have no clue what to do now.

I expect this thread to end like the other ones, 50 views and 0 replies, but it's worth a try. Please help me....

I have an nx9105 and it works flawlessly (except for the 5-in-1 card reader) but I have never come across your problem. I am currently running the gentoo-dev-source 2.6.9-r9 with the Alps patch applied, but other than that it's stock Gentoo.

You may want to browse the R3000 mailing list archives. I suggest you subscribe and help out others since you may have solved others' problems just as they might help solve yours. The Compaq R3000 series, which this list is dedicated to, is the very same laptop as the nx9105, only with a different color and sold under the Compaq brand instead of HP (with the obvious difference that the nx9105 never comes with a 64bit CPU).

You may want to check out what BIOS revision you are using. I updated mine as soon as I got the computer since I had heard it solved a lot of problems, so it might be a wise idea. Just make sure you get the correct BIOS image!

Thanks, I'll check out the mailinglist. I don't think upgrading the BIOS will do anything, since it has worked flawlessly before.
