I'm having a bit of a time getting x.org to work on my laptop, a new Gateway M460X. To give background, I initially installed Debian 3.1 (stable), upgraded to the "testing" variant, and then upgraded to the "unstable" variant. The main reason for this was because XFree was giving me huge headaches and generally being a pain in the butt and I knew X.Org would be simpler. So far, I have X.Org able to start using xdm, gdm, or kdm at the LCD's native resolution of 1280x800. There are no error messages. However, after logging in from xdm (to go to gnome) it hangs. With kdm, it hangs after the first keyboard or mouse input. With gdm, it doesn't even finish drawing the login dialog. Note that once hung, it stays that way, locking up the keyboard and mouse (the mouse here is a synaptics touchpad and USB optical mouse, both of which seem to work). Nothing else seems to be broken and I can log into a console just fine. Does anyone have a clue as to what's going on? I'll send through my xorg.conf, Xorg.0.log, and whatever else is needed later (when I'm on the laptop in question).
It might be good to note that I have another Debian unstable system up and running just fine, X.Org and all. Hence the confusion...
Can't really think of what happening till we see the log, but a few things, do you any extensions especially Composite active, how about openGL stuff.
Try turning off dri , and the composite extension. On quite a few machine's Xorg seems oto be very flaky at the moment with composite, especially with the c++ ABI upgrade going on.
Alright, I'll give that a try. It'll be a little while 'till I can post the logs, as I'm not allowed to include attachments yet and they're too long to fit. In case it helps, I'm using a custom-compiled 2.6.12.5 kernel, KDM 3.3 and qt 3.3
Well, it's a moot point now. After hosing the system for the third time, I gave up and installed kubuntu, which worked. Thanks for the tips anyway, leonscape.
