X.org ati driver crashes system only loading KDE

I just bought a Compaq V2000 laptop and I'm working with Debian's unstable branch, which now proudly boasts X.org. The video adaptor is a Radeon XPRESS 2.

It's got a wide screen (I think 1280x768) which seems to work fine under the old vesa driver. The problem happens when I change to the "radeon" driver or "ati". Under both drivers, gdm loads fine, but when I log in and KDE starts up, the shit hits the fan.

If I switch out to a console right-fast, nothing will go wrong until I head back to my X session, which will invariably crash the system. I can't even SSH in to reboot it! And yes, if I don't leave the X session as KDE starts up, it crashes as well.

I'm attaching my xorg.conf and "lspci"

This kind of unexpected behaviour is usual with misconfigured proprietary drivers but I've never seen it on opensource drivers. You could try some or all of the following thing to check if it works.

Try disabling all that is related low-level hardware access to your graphics card. I'd take out the DRI section from your xorg.conf. Also disabling all DRI and AGP kernel modules could be worth the effort. If you use framebuffer console try disabling it also...

You could also try using the proprietary ATI driver if you don't mind having a tainted kernel.

Wow, this is awful. If I use fglrx, ATI's driver, it locks up my keyboard about 90% of the time! ati and radeon, on the other hand, both invariably hang when my dm starts up gnome OR kde! looks like I'm back to vesa for a while!

For other folks with this problem, I'm currently following this bug, which may be related:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3869

I'll just wait for this to resolve and find its way into Debian unstable - I'm not so impatient to build it from source, and I can live with vesa If I need to, despite it's slowness

Fix fix fix

I did indeed find a fix for this. I went directly to Flavio Stanchina, who packages fglrx drivers, and submitted a patch for the code to compile properly. I believe the patch has been incorporated, so please check out http://xoomer.virgilio.it/flavio.sta...installer.html for the latest and greatest. It works for me! I ended up building the packages using the debuild system, but it's all documented on his page.
