Wireless with Fedora Core 1 / RH 9 on Notebook comps
 

I am currently trying my best to get my wireless NIC's to work with linux....

I have one that has a Linksys WPC11 (pc card)

I also have a new Dell Inspiron 8600 w/ the Centrino Crap..... (intel wireless controller)

Have tried the Ndis Wrapper for the Linksys, with no luck.....and was wondering if I should even bother with the Inspiron's Integrated WiFi.....


Any Input would be greatly appreciated......thanx....

Intel have released the source for their wireless cards and people have started to package them for different distros so it is a definate YES as far as giving it a go, you've got nothing to loose.

Try and find out the exact chipset of the Intel controller and then google for it.

although I have a positive feeling about getting linux on the Centrino, I am rather weary of reloading the machine....do you know of any freeware / demo versions of any Partition resizing Utils?

Otherwise, I must reload the entire machine (80 GB of software, documents, source code...etc)

I also have the WPC11 Linksys Wireless card and Fedora Core 2 recognized it perfectly, as did SuSE 9.1... I also had it working under Debian Sarge before I over-wrote the HD with SuSE...

SuSE 9.1 is great.. I highly recommend it... Hardware recognition is thebest I've seen

FC2 and SUSE9.1 will recognize the card without hassle as it is built into the 2.6.x kernel. The 2.4.x kernel doesn't have the modules built in by default, they have to be added manually.

For FC1/RH9 wisit http://dag.wieers.com This is one of the best RPM repositorys on the web, and I would strongly recommend using Apt (GUI component called Synaptic). There is a small syndicate of guys that work with Dag and have clubbed together to increase the list of available packages.

i think that Dag, Freshrpms, ATrpms, and NEWrpms are actually working on a package merge. Freshrpms seems to be the leader of the pack, some of the NEWrpms acutally depend on packages from Freshrpms.

heres a good spot to get all of your repos. the have a package tracker, and a script that builds a yum/apt config file for you that you can edit to your liking.

i usuallly install the freshrpms version of yum right after the install, ive found that the USFCx repo is pretty slow for me, and freshrpms has more mirrors.
