there are some routers from netgear.... just check the webpage of them.... I own one, too and it works pretty well. It doesn't depend on Linux, it's just a matter of things like e.g., encryption (I strongly recommend WPA2).

The driver for your 2915agb wireless card is already included in the kernel...

Hy seelenbild28 and thanks for the reply.

If i understand, since my wireless card is included in the kernel, i can by any router-modem, it will work?

I think the connection of the router should be a RJ45 and not a USB or what so ever type!!!!!

Thanks again seelenbild28 for your clear answer.

I don't know how broadband is organized in algeria but in germany it is quite easy: your provider sends you a router with or without wlan option and everything is connected to the telephone line. now let's suppose you only have a router without wlan. then it is possible to connect another router providing also wlan via cable to the first one. the wireless on your pc is something different: if you have wlan provided by a router, your working wireless pc card will be able to see this network IF the card is configured well, i.e., you need the appropriate driver, EITHER by using a program called ndiswrapper & the original windows driver for the card OR using an existing linux driver. The problem with newer cards is that usually no linux driver exists. In your case the driver is already implemented in the kernel (depending on the kernel version...!). a short look with google told me that your Intel 2915abg wireless card is running with the ipw2200 driver and the ipw2200-firmware. Depending on the linux distribution you should get packages for it. Unfortunately, I am not familiar with FC7.

and yes, in my opinion you could by any router you like, BUT I strongly recommend that it is capable of providing WPA2 encryption since you don't want to have "guests" in your wlan net... yes, the connection from one router to another which provides wlan should be a RJ45 cable and NOT usb*g

Hy again seelenbild28,

Again Thank you very much for the clear answer.

I am using Fedora 7 and here is the kernel version:

[red@localhost ~]$ uname -a
Linux localhost.localdomain 2.6.20-2931.fc7xen #1 SMP Mon Aug 13 10:12:37 EDT 2007 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
[red@localhost ~]$

Just a last question:
We run ndiswrapper in case we don't have a driver and in my case you said it is already there, so i can go and by the device (router-modem).

1) kernel: it should be fine... if not, there will be for sure a newer one, e.g. 2.6.22 available for fedora 7, but anyway, you could google on your own about fedora 7, kernel and ipw2200

2) in my opinion you could go and by some router. and yes, the driver should work out of the box. do not forget to install also the firmware package, otherwise it will not work..

3) did you already google for the specific router you want to buy and linux? not to blame me later on*g...

Hello seelenbild28,

Just an answer at your last question about "Euros", well of course we don't use Euros in Algeria, so i had the opportunity to go to "Marseille" and by googling i saw the costs of such materials. In Algeria we don't produce this equipment so it cost more than two times the real price, that's why i said it cost around 150 Euros.

In fact i went to Marseille for a work and i had the opprtunity to by a Modem-Router-Switch. It cost me 70 Euros.
It's a D-Link DSL-924
it's as it is written in the box: Kit modem-routeur ADSL2/2+ sans fil
i' ve got inside a wireless NIC card: DWL-G122 and
the modem-routeur: DSL-G624T

Well seelenbild28, i wanted to contact you about what i bought before doing any mistake in the configuration.

What should i do now?
At first i would like to have the Desktop PC running using the RJ45 cable with the new equipment then after trying to connect the Laptop using the wireless D-Link.

I've in fact a Desktop PC which is running Fedora7 and a Ibm Laptop z60m which is running also fedora 7.

cheers seelenbild28.
take care
