Why does XFree86 keeps defaulting to 320x200?

My laptop is a Compaq LTE Elite 4/75CXL. I've installed Slackware 8.1, did a lot of research on how to configure X and everything has been great.. except I can't get the resolution above 320x200.

I've read about success stories on this laptop before:

According to this http://www.delilinux.de/forum/topic.php?id=137 your graphics chip was supported by XFree 3.3.6.
As can be seen here http://www.nielshorn.net/slackware/slack_versions.php that version of XFree was supplied in Slackware 7.1.

I suggest that you try using Slackware 7.1

I kept futzing with it until I got it to work with Slackware 8.1. The system can become extremely slow in X, I think due to it not having any 2D acceleration rather than the processor being a 486 (correct me if I'm wrong).

I ended up using the XF86_SVGA server. The problem I think was that I needed to use the "svga" server with X but for some reason using "svga" as a driver under "device" within my X config came up as not being found. This is only seems to be a problem with Slackware 8.1, it worked fine in 7.1. "vga" gave me 320x200 and "vesa" didn't work.

I copied that to /user/bin/X11 and replaced XFree86. I moved XF86Config to /etc so that the new server could find it.

I had to make a few modifications but the base XF86Config I used was from here:

And according to the forum post I linked earlier, I added 'xmodmap -e "keycode 22 = BackSpace"' to ~/.xinitrc to fix backpace when running X.

I also set permissions for the new server:

sudo chown root XF86_SVGA
sudo chgrp root XF86_SVGA
sudo chmod +s XF86_SVGA

Despite not having acceleration, 256 colors (my card supports 16bit), it's fairly usable with the xfce window manager. No Gnome or KDE, unfortunately. Those managers crawl on this machine.

The battery also seems to last a good 4 hours. Not bad for a 16 year old laptop!
