Well, to save the time of burning a openSUSE 10.2 Installtion DVD, I bought one on Ebay. I checked the CD for errors and it says there are none.

I put the CD in and it came up with them menu asking whether I want to Boot from Hard Disk, Install, Install with ACPI disabled, Install with Local ACPI disabled, Install with Safe Settings, etc. I chose the plain install. My computer came up with a screen asking which language I wanted to install in. I chose English (US). I then clicked next. It then asked me which mode I wanted to use, New Installation or Update. I chose New Installation. It started "Creating Source dvd:///" and then an error came up. A window popped up saying:

Error occured while creating the catalog.
dvd://
Unknown error: Unable to copy media
directory
to /var/tmp/TmpDir.c4cuc4/Media

Retry Abort


Well, I tried Retry several times. I then tried abort. It came up with a window saying:

Failed to initialize the catalog. Try Again?
Yes No

I clicked Yes, and it asked for CD-ROM or DVD-ROM Media. I tried CD-ROM and the same catalog creation error came up. I tried DVD-ROM and the same error came up. It is really frustrating to do this for hours. Could someone please help? I am running a Dell B130 machine that used to run Windows XP, but has been running Ubuntu 6.10 for the past few days. I want to install SuSE but it's not working. If anyone could help, it would be most appreciated. If anyone would like to see a picture or video of the installation, I can post one. Anyways, I hope I was specific enough about the problem and that this get's answered fast.

No clue why it's happening but have you tried one of the other install types just to compare? Also do you have another machine you can try running the install on to test the media - ie. the cd/dvd you bought?

from the error message it would seem that the install process is having trouble copying temporary files to the tmp directory. perhaps there is something wrong with your harddrive?

i would advise downloading the DVD from suse's website, burning it, and then trying to see if it installs from there. you could also try a installation via internet. How old is the dvd drive? The original suse dvd's are double_layered as far as i know, perhaps the drive is to old to read it properly..?

I would double that. I have just downloaded 10.2 and ran into the exact same problem. I used torrent to download the image, tried the install and it failed, did an md5 check on the iso and it did not match. Checked the iso size on both the torrent server and the client box I used to download the iso and burn, they did not match. Luckily the server (CentOS linux) is mine, so I used winscp to do the download instead of using the normal torrent interface and that brought me a complete iso file.

Thanks for all your concerns everyone. It still won't work. I don't really know much about the cd or dvd because I bought it off eBay. The thing about it being Dual Layer piqued my interest though. I currently can not burn anything because that computer is dead and I am trying to fix it.

My drive is a TSSTcorp one that comes default with every Dell B130 laptop. It supports CD, CD-RW, DVD, DVD-RW, but not DVD-RAM. If anyone can help I would extremely pleased.

one quick option - if you have broadband - just try to download the netinstall.iso from opensuses site. its about 50-60 MB and the whole install is done via network.

One other question: is there any clue why you bought the dvd on ebay? if it is free available in the internet... suppose you have no network connection... hmm. then I would suggest the same as the others. there are plenty of people reporting that they have install problems with the self-burned dvds. just try once again..

on my thinpad r61, opensuse was installing and still running like a charm... I always prefer the net install way.

for all others: opensuse 10.3 includes a cd/dvd checking toll as first step of the installation... perhaps due to the problems people reported in the past..

Thanks for the info. I am happy to say, thanks to the OpenSUSE cd, I was able to rebuild my filesystem and use the rescue system to copy my files to a flash drive. I then wiped the harddrive and installed Ubuntu 6.06 for the mean time while trying to find a solution.

About the internet install, if I connected my ethernet cable from my Westell Model 327W to my laptop, would it work?

westell? is that a router or something? the question relevant for net install is, if your ethernet card in your pc/laptop is known by linux. what is the manufacturer? please provide us with the output of "lspci"... also, you could check if you have connection to the internet via your card in ubuntu, can't you?*g

Yes, Westell is a router/modem company.

My wireless card is a Broadcom 4138 [AirForce One 54g] wireless card.

I have tried it in Ubuntu after a fresh install and it did not work. I installed ndiskwrapper and ndisk-gtk and then rebooted. It did not work.

Currently, that is not the biggest problem. The problem is trying to install openSUSE on my laptop.

Once I get SuSE installed, then I can start worrying about my wirelss card.
