I have a problem with Suse 9 and I cant install the driver.
When I want to play games I get a message:
No 3D graphics card available or 3D support not configured yet, however application uses respectively requires 3D hardware support.
When I try to enable 3D as root:
Cannot enable openGL acceleration To activate the 3D subsystem for this card you need to use the commercial driver from nVidia. please download the nVidia installer from the nVidia web server first. After you have installed the driver you can enable 3D with Sax2.
I downloaded that file, but it wants to install by typing the command:
sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-5336-pkg1.run.
This message comes up: No such file or directory
I try to install the file bye exiting x, but it say's also:
No such file or directory.
Reading over the above mentioned link, the file from NVidia indicates that
"NOTE: There is no need to try to enable 3D support. It's already
enabled, when the nvidia driver is running."
However, as I have followed all advise and do believe I have the proper drivers installed and working properly, I still haven't seen any improvement in any 3d accelerated games. Once upon a time I installed the Nvidia driver properly and was able to enable the 3d acceleration, but this was almost a year ago and with a different motherboard. I suspect there's something weird with the new drivers from Nvidia.
jwwatters, when x-windows starts you should see the NVIDIA splash screen if your driver is installed correctly.
I have one question for you though. Have you tried installing the NVIDIA driver through the YAST Online UPDATE? That is how I have installed the NVIDIA driver on my desktop since SUSE 9.0 came out. It has worked great for me.
I think I've actually got it installed correctly now, but the OS still won't recognize it for me to "Enable" the 3D acceleration.
Whether or not that has any real significance, I don't know..
