using an external monitor

hey everyone

I am trying to get an external monitor (Dell M781p) connected to my compaq presario 2500. When I run xinit with the monitor connected, my LCD is fine, and the monitor comes up with some white vertical lines that flash alot, and a lot more random flashing stuff. its really hard to explain, but I am sure some of you know what it looks like. X (or windowmaker, im not sure which one it is) knows that the other monitor is there, and maximizes windows across both monitors, although you cant see the window on the CRT.
Anyone know how to fix this? Also, I would like to have a single workspace spread across both monitors, but maximized windows only fill one monitor. This isnt a big deal, but is it possible?

Thanks

XF86Config (although I am using xorg):
