user name and password


Please Help.
I recently purchased a laptop at a local boot fair. i was told it had linux op installed and was shown it working. however when I got it hom and turned it on it prompts me for a user name and password. I went back to the fair but the guy had gone. Surprise Surprise. Can any one help me. Can I get pass this screen.

If it uses lilo as the boot manager you can startup in single user mode by typing:
linux single
at the lilo startup then you can change the root password with passwd
If it uses grub you can do the same thing by pressing e go to the line that starts with kernel at the end of the line add the word single then press enter and then b
