USB and Wireless issue with Thinkpad L412

Hi guys,

One of my acquaintances has this thinkpad-L412-core-i5-540m with the exact same specifications since 4 years.
He is planning to sell it in a cheap price($168 ~ 10000INR) and have contacted me if I'm willing to buy it. Even though I have a i5 Desktop and a small netbook(which is mostly useless) I thought of giving the laptop a try by looking at the laptop first. I'll be visiting him this Saturday. He mentioned that the laptop has 2 issues as of now :-

1. All the 3 USB ports are not working exactly like the USB data transfer ports. He can charge his cellphone using any of the ports but won't see connected devices. The OS is XP I believe, so can it be a driver issue?

2. This one is a strange issue, he mentioned that whenever he turns on the wireless switch, the laptop shuts down itself. I have no idea why this could be happening. Any guesses if this could be a hardware or wrong drivers issue?

I'm planning to carry along a OpenSUSE 13.1 and Linux Mint 17 Live CD to check if these issues persist in Live CD mode too.

Regards,
Prince

Not enough information so it could be either hardware or drivers for both problems.

Update :-

Turned out 2 of the right hand side USB ports were essentially broken without his knowledge(?). And the wireless issue in reality was that whenever you would connect to the wifi to access the internet, the laptop will shut down. It was a faulty driver issue IMO. I bought the laptop, gave it to the service center, replacing the 2 USB ports will cost me around (1200INR ~ 20$) which is okay with me.
I'll get the laptop tomorrow finally from the service center and the first thing installed will be Slackware. Yayy!

Regards.
