Upgrade Linux Mint 10 to 11

If I download Mint 11 to create a live CD/DVD...does it know the difference of what is already installed or creates another installation? I have not completed a system backup yet and just beginning to look for backup/cloning software. I have PING but not tried to use it yet. My computer: Dell 1545 w/4gb ram and 320 hd.
