Unable to use projector with Linux.

Greetings!

I have Linux 9.0 running on my Dell Latitude C840. The graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce 4. When I tried to use the projector using the Fn-F8 key, the screen goes crazy (both on the monitor and the projected image) and I see some patterns on the screen. If I then press the keys to logout (Ctrl-Alt-Del followed by 'Enter' without actually seeing the "logout" option on the screen), then it automatically logs me out and I come back to my login screen. Looks like some problem with my configuration.

I tried to boot up the laptop with the projector on. It then projects fine when the bootup screen is in the text mode (with info on the startup sessions). It is only when the screen goes into graphics mode that the projector stops to get any signal. I have tried various screen resolutions (1024x768, 800x600) but none work. Do I have change some configuration file someplace?

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time,
Rajesh.
