unable to run kpilot & gnomepilot (Debian Lenny) on hp ipaq

Hi
My ipaq RZ 1710 is connected via usb, no cradle, as /dev/ttyUSB0. But neither of the above apps. works. Gnome asks for basic info then asks me to hit hotsync- on my pda this is I assume the "connect" icon on Activesync. Predictably this doesn't work- my pda is set up for a windows pc & there is (as far as I can tell from the manual) no way to enter another pc from the pda itself. Kpilot looks promising, the pda shows briefly attempting to connect, but the dialogue on the app shows "unable to connect". Autodetect results in SIGSEGV code 11 or SIGABRT code 6, and the backtrace provides no information.

bugs.kde.org had one other similar bug report, from a Kubuntu user, I added to it but don't expect much as this report is still"unconfirmed" after 2 months ie I assume not actioned.

All the info I can find on LQ indicates that the ipaq is well supported and indeed is correctly identified on dmesg.

I would try a hard boot of the pda to clear the windows pc from the connection info, but this will erase contacts, etc, so is a nuisance; and I can't see a way to manually enter my present PC into the device. I can't find any other apps to do the job. I would try installing Linux on my PDA using SD card if I knew how, but this seems a very technical process and out of my reach.

I run dual boot with Vista so could take the line of least resistance here but... we're better than that aren't we??? Well, at least some of you people are!

Has anyone experienced/overcome similar problems?

I don't own an ipaq, so take this with a grain of salt: As far as I know, your device runs Windows CE, right? The different pilots are designed to run with PalmOS devices, so they aren't likely to do much for you.
When people talk about the ipaq being well supported by Linux, they mean as a host system - if you ever want to install Linux on your device, you should find it relatively easy.

That said, there is software that lets you connect your Linux machine to a Windows CE device; you could try synce, which appears to be the standard application for that purpose.

Good luck!

Thank you! SynCE has managed to talk to my ipaq after a bit of persuasion- at present I have to set it up as root on each session, and even then it doesn't seem to have synchronization tools, but with Linux these sort of things usually turn out to be details that can be overcome after a bit of delving. I'm grateful for your help on this, saved me wasting more time on the PalmOS apps.
