This is a
bug reported by many users in Red Hat bugzilla. A user reports the same Laptop model as yours (is it you?) and it seems tied to some models of the NVIDIA graphic card.
Recently I've had an issue with the NVIDIA card and the new NOVEAU driver. Check the boot messages at the beginning (before the screen goes blank) and if you see some messages related to
kernel: noveau you can try to disable it at a successive boot. To do this you should add
nomodeset to the kernel options. I don't know exactly how to do this in the Ubuntu installation, but
this page might help (at a quick glance it looks like F6+ESC is what you need). HTH.
