Unable to get wireless working with Slackware

Hello I recently installed Slackware 13 on my Toshiba Satellite A205. I went to the Network Manager I got an "Error cannot parse XML file", the applet grays out and does not respond. I tried iwconfig, and modprobe and no dice; the machine has a Realtek 8189B wireless card. Any help will be greatly appreciated, everything else works great.

Welcome to LQ!

Um, Slackware doesn't use NetworkManager. Do you mean wicd?

Could you give a bit more explanation of what you did and any errors you're seeing? Sorry, but "no dice" doesn't really give us enough to go on.

Could you post the output of lsmod? I'm not sure if that card is supported out of the box or not. Just for giggles, also post the output of iwconfig.

Thank you for taking the time to answer. I started using the KDE Network Manager, that is what grayed-out and froze. The output from iwconfig was:
wlan0
IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:'''
Mode Managed Frequency:2.412GHz Access Point: Not Associated TT-Power=0dBM
Retry min limit:7 RTS thrff
Fragment thr=2352B
Encription Keyff
Power Managementff
The output of lsmod:
cfsg 80211 3648 rtl 8187 MAC 80211
Once again thank you for the time and effort
Best regards

I don't think that works well in Slackware. Do yourself a favor and install wicd. You'll find the package in the /extra directory on your install disc. Once it is installed, start wicd (/etc/rc.d/rc.wicd start) and then make sure that your user is part of the netdev group. In a console, start wicd-client and that should bring up the wicd GUI, which should allow you to connect.

That is actually good, it looks like your wireless card has been found and is (hopefully) functional. If you get wicd going, that should let you configure it.

The output of lsmod:
cfsg 80211 3648 rtl 8187 MAC 80211
That also looks good. From what I've googled, rtl8187 should be the correct driver.
