UI responsiveness

Laptop AMD k6 2 3D NOw at 380MHZ, 160Mb Ram, 8MB video card. Windows 2000 runs extremely well. UI is very resposive no matter how many apps open. RedHat 9 runs slower. UI is not as responsive. Apps take an extreme amount of time to open. Switching between tasks becomes more unresponsive as more applications are open. I do not think it is the processor or Ram since 2k runs on the same hardware and runs well. Redhat config is 2.4 kernel running XFCE 4. Any ideas

You do not mention what desktop you use. The computer I use the most is a 366MHz Thinkpad with 192MB RAM, which is a pretty similar system to what you have, and I have a pretty responsive and usable desktop. But then again, I don't use KDE or Gnome - I switch between OpenBox and XFCE4, with some Fluxbox usage thrown in every now and again to try out new themes.

You may also want to try a fully preempted kernel as it improves desktop response a lot.
