Ubuntu on Dell 10 wireless won't connect

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Hi everyone,

I have ordered a Dell Inspiron mini 10 with 8 GB SSD and Linux Ubuntu. I have upgraded to 9.04, but I can't get the wireless connections to work. The wired network just runs fine, but the wireless network isn't even displayed in the Network Manager applet.
When keying "iwlist scan" in the console, I get the message "Interface doesn't support scanning".
Upon "lspci -vnn | grep 14e4" it says that the network controller is a Broadcom Corp BCM 4312 (rev 01).

As I'm relatively new to linux, please post idiot-proof ways to solve this problem. Thanks in advance!

For anything that resembles a netbook (Dell Mini 9, Mini 10, Acer Aspire One, Asus EeePC, etc.) I highly suggest using the Ubuntu netbook remix. I can guarantee it will work out-of-the-box.

The 4312 is a nightmarish chipset - I have it in my Dell Inspiron 15, and in my Dell Mini 9, no matter what I try, I can never get it to work. However, I threw the Ubuntu netbook "remix" onto the Mini 9, and *bam* it worked no problem.

Thank you for your response. I did as you told me, and installed the latest netbook remix. Still, the *§$"% - Wireless isn't working, it just keeps popping up the "Wireless authentication required" window, without even detecting the very much up and running wlan.
Any other ideas besides getting another os/netbook?

Whoa, hold on a second - if you are getting a dialog box popping up saying "Wireless authentication required," it has found the network and is trying to connect to it, but it needs a WEP or WPA/WPA2 key to authenticate! The wireless is working!

What about the CODEC sound card? Is that issue fixed in the Netbook remix? I havea HP mini 1151 NR and Ubuntu Desktop 9.04 will not connect to a wireless network. I am going to install the Netbook reemix but I would like to know if the audio problems are fixed for the HP Mini 1151 NR? The HP Mini has a Broadcom card in it as well.
