Ubuntu Login failure
Maybe I should of stuck to Vista?!?!
And for the record I'm trying to set up a Compaq Presario CQ60 to run Ubuntu 14.04 (maybe that's the problem!). Initially I attempted to instal 14.04 in it's self created drive of approx 47gig leaving the remainder 107gig for Windows all on a 160gig drive. Everything seemed to go well until login - I then I found that login was not possible either by password or as a guest - it seems to try but after a few flickers and a second or two of black screen I'm back to the login page. So I tried a reinstal, thinking it would wipe the previous instal but now as is obvious to me it installed alongside - giving me two copies of Ubuntu (not wanted) and as originally wanted Vista still in place. However, it was not possible to login to either of the Ubuntu's! So I wiped the lot Inc Vista - reinstalled 14.04........guess what? Still can't login. Sorry so long but this has near driven me mad. PS. I know how to pull up Grub and get to the terminal and quite happy to do away with the login all together! Any help appreciated Pozzouk. |

Also, probably you did not get what was the "User Name" and "Password" authorized at the installation, you should take note of it while the installation process is still going, because at reboot you "must" login with that username and password. Now, this do: 1. Check the downloaded iso file with the md5sum hash given from your download source. 2. Burn and recheck the sum. 3. Install, and pay attention as the installation process goes on. Write down your user name and password to make it sure. --- 4. If you wanted to clean your hard disk because it may appear confusing to you at installation, you can delete those unwanted partitions at the installer process, but if you get confused you can use another live CD with reformatting tool. Download a Gparted live CD here burn it and run to clean up your HDD first before you install a fresh copy of your Ubuntu. 5. If you still have problem come back. By the way, you are installing Ubuntu 14.04. This version is exactly what a simplified windows-like distro is releasing at the moment: Linux Lite v. 2.8 is built upon Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I suggest you to use Linux Lite first, it has a better installation interface because the developers aim that distro to cater the new comers from windows-world. Read and download from here --the md5sum hash is posted just above the download link. Using that distro you may find installation easier from there. Hope that helps. Good luck. m.m. |
Cheers m.m.
I seem to have got in a right old mess. First off, I definitely had the password and login right, as if I deliberately put in incorrect details they were rejected immeadiately in red and stated to be incorrect - whereas, when correctly entered it was taking 4 or 5 seconds to simply return to a cleared login box and no mention of incorrectness.....also the guest login behaved in the same manner. As for Linux Lite 2.8 Brilliant I thought - I downloaded and installed last night marvelling as to how great it was (huge thanks). It really is just what I had been looking for, until I attempted a reboot and I immediately ran into wi-fi problems. I gather there are potential driver issues?......so I searched about and came up with hundreds of different possibilities......I tried a few but with no luck. Eventually I decided on a fresh install of Lite 2.8 ......but still no wi-fi......every option I tried had the wi-fi connection greyed out. I have reinstalled 5 times and as yet not a sniff of a wi-fi connection success???? The strange thing is that wi-fi worked great on the very first install until the reboot - but in all 5 installs since not a sign any of wi-fi. Although everything else seems fine. Thanks again and in anticipation of any other ideas on this issue. ATB Pozzouk. |

Yes it doesnt' post the WLAN connection immediately. In my case, a-not-high-end netbook hosted Linux Lite 2.8, the icon (a diagonal plug-socket) is disconnected momentarily until I clicked it and chose among the many services detected and entered the appropriate password. To note, my WLAN Interface is a Broadcom! a notorious anti-FOSS hardware brand. If you tell us what you did and what came out, probably I am able to help you how to continue. Hope that helps. |
open a terminal
then post the output of the following: sudo rfkill list sudo ifconfig -a |

Including all other household wifi dependent gadgets. Thank for your help guys ATB Pozzouk. |

Evening Longhorn,
And the result of the ath5k probe is: **************************************************************************************************** jacko@jacko-Compaq-Presario-CQ60-Notebook-PC ~ $ sudo grep ath5k /etc/modprobe.d/* [sudo] password for jacko: /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-ath_pci.conf:# which ath5k cannot recover. So I proceeded to remove the card.......poked it about and then fixed it back in place......it worked!!!! for about 20 seconds and it was gone again, so had a couple of more goes at removing and replacing but could not replicate the initial success, so I presume it is more than a bad contact.....Hmm! I have ordered a new card at more than a fair price in case that is the problem.....what do you think? Cheers Pozzouk. |

If you have ordered a new card already, I hope that one works well for you. :) |
before trying to connect run the following command
Code:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off |
Pozzouk,
This may not do any harm, do this just in case your wlan device is in encryption mode, get a terminal and be root. Issue this: Quote:

Not sure if the above is relevant as I have the wireless card removed at the moment and replacement due tomorrow in the post for less than a couple of £££pounds.......Not sure if this alternative card is going to help me but nothing else seems to have thrown any light on the situation. However, I removed the card a day or two back and on refitting I did have wireless for a few minutes - then it was gone again!!!! What also came to notice, was that my blue wifi light could not be turned off at all........it only stayed orange while booting up - now it is removed the light is orange at all times.........I guess I will have a better idea if there is something quirky about the incumbent one when the alternative hopefully arrives tomorrow?????? As ever - thanks for all the help guys. Pozzouk. |
