Ubuntu install on Sony laptop with vista says "This computer has no OS on it"

I have resized the partition in vista and created two new partitions. One of 4GB for the swap and the other much larger for Linux. They are not named or formatted. I have a 500 GB HDD (RAID 0 2X250 GB/Go) with Vista home premium installed.

Everything with the installation goes smoothly until I get to the setting up partitions bit and select manual/advanced where I get the message "This computer has no operating system on it"

I want to dual boot vista and linux.

Ubuntu works fine from the CD.

Any suggestions?

It would be helpful if you posted partition information. I assume you are trying to install Ubuntu? If the Live CD works, open a terminal and type the command: sudo fdisk -l (lower case Letter L), you may be prompted for a password. Post that info here.

Does vista still boot?

This is the response: Unable to seek on /dev/sda

Vista still boots normally and Ubuntu still runs fine from the CD.

My first reaction was to wonder why you used Vista's partitioning tool to resize and setup other partitions. This is bad. Get yourself a copy of GParted, boot it up, wipe everything but the Vista & Vista Recovery partitions, and redo your partition setup. This may help during your Ubuntu installation. Just my 2 cents.
