ubuntu crashed my laptop today.. help
 

So, my computer was working just fine today, until I decided to upgrade to the newer release for ubuntu, the system tells me it's going to restart, and i start getting the 109.23442 ata1:00 status [ drdy err ] ata1:00 error [ unc ] ...

Mind you, I'm not very ubuntu-savvy, i've been learning in bits and pieces as necessary, and I came across a posting that said to do

"Re: Hard Drive Error : ata3.00: status: { DRDY ERR }
It's Kernel Bug on ata ACPI. I put "options libata noacpi=1" on /etc/modprobe.d/options and the ERROR is gone."

... BUUUT.. I have no idea how to do this.. So, can some one please explain?

I really need to get my coursework off of there so I can submit it to my classes. They're already late, and my grade is pending my computer being up and running.

Got a similar problem with Ubuntu 9.04 when booting, but it does boot for me despite the errors.

I've to run for work, but do this:

- Get a Ubuntu live CD (or any other live Cd for that matter). Boot from the CD, access your files and backup them (or submit it to your classes while you are at it).

- Still on the live CD, you can access your Linux partitions and the /etc/modprobe.d/options and add the line as suggested by the link you found.

The answer lies with a LiveCD for both backup/restore and accessing your files =)

I will get back to this later if you still are not sure what to do. Although, somebody will probably jump in and help before me :)
